Together with owner Ryan Cochran, Albie Powers has designed a unique Jalopy Journal car coat complete with a chenille logo patch on the back which is available on www.jalopyjournal.com for the members of the H.A.M.B community. American Rebel is honored to work with Ryan and both are dedicated to keeping the love of all things traditional and cool alive.
Some people collect cars, others collect car culture. Albie Powers collects vintage car-club jackets. If you haven’t done so already, read the story about Paul “Snooky”Janich’s car coat in the RJ Times first. (Issue 38 page 4). It sort of like the Shroud of Turin, only it’s legit.
Albie knows that not everybody can own such a piece of history. As a reaction to that, he formed American Rebel jacket. Through that company, he crafts period-perfect car club jackets, varsity-style coats made popular during the halcyon days of American hot rod and custom culture by their elaborate stitching and embroidery.
While he offers several jacket styles, he presents them in two ways: Stock and Custom Rebel, with a second subset as a part of the latter.
Don’t confuse “stock” with cheap or limited. Every jacket has an 80% virgin-wool body with two sleeve options: wool or top –grain leather. They feature heavyweight acrylic/Lyrcra (Ultraknit) trim and your choice of an Ultraknit or Byron-style collar with contrasting color under the collar.
The Custom Rebel Line transports you to a time when you could wander into a sports shop and pick and choose every element to create a truly personalized jacket. American Rebel Jacket offers so many options, the possibilities are endless. You can be certain that your design will be unique to you. As a part of the second subset mentioned earlier, there is a lightweight summer jacket just like the ones speed vendors used to offer-with or without stripes.
The coolest option of all however, really isn’t part of the jackets, per se. As a part of the Custom Rebel Line, Albie offers real, honest-to-goodness chain stitch embroidery. Bear in mind that this isn’t some latter-day interpretation produced by a CNC-operated machine. It’s the hand done, labor intensive style produced on a 1942 vintage machine that has without a doubt, stitched club jackets. For that matter, it could’ve been the one that stitched Albie’s fathers car club jacket-the one that got him all wound up over jackets in the first place. –Chris Shelton
